Jeong Jae-yeong, o ator de cinema coreano predileto dessa blogueira, volta à tela grande esse ano com o filme “Countdown”.
Incansável, Jeong já havia estrelado recentemente o filme “Glove”, sobre um time de baseboll de jovens com deficiência auditiva, com roteiro baseado em fatos reais.

Um coletor de dívidas implacável, Tae Geon-ho (Jeong Jae-yeong), está à caça de uma mulher misteriosa, Cha Ha-yeon (Jeon Do-yeon), para executar seu trabalho de sempre.

Ha-yeon é uma estelionatária que acaba de sair da prisão. Traída por um amigo, ela convence Geon-ho a ajudá-la em seu plano de vingança, em troca de muito dinheiro.

Jeon Do-yeon, para quem não lembra recebeu o prêmio de Melhor Atriz no Festival de Cinema de Cannes de 2007, pelo filme Secret Sunshine.

O último reconhecimento como ator para Jeong Jae-yeong foi no ano passado, no Blue Dragon Awards, em que ganhou o prêmio de Melhor Ator pelo excelente filme MOSS.

Os dois atores já haviam colaborado anteriormente no filme de ação "No Blood, No Tears" (2002), do diretor Ryoo Seung-wan.

The Jury

Korean director Lee Chang-dong will be part of the jury, headed by French actress Isabelle Huppert, Taiwanese actresses Shu Qi, Asia Argento (Italy) and Robin Wright Penn (US) and directors James Gray (US) turkish Nuri Bilge Ceylan, and english writer Hanif Kureishi. The festival´s president is Gilles Jacob.

Lee's "Secret Sunshine" was nominated for the Palme d'Or at Cannes in 2007, and won the Best Actress Award.

"Thirst" (South Korea)

Park Chan-wook´s new thriller was nominated for the Palme d'Or. The korean director won the Grand Prix Award in 2004, with "Old Boy".

Song Kang-ho is a priest who becomes a vampire and falls in love with his friend's wife.

Lou Ye´s “Spring Fever” (China, France). In 2006, Ye presented the film “Summer Palace”, without the chinese government approval.

Un Certain Regard section

"Mother - 2009"

Bong Joon-ho´s drama-thriller will be screened at the Un Certain Regard section.

The director won the award for Best Director at the 2007 Oporto International Film Festival for "The Host" (2006).

Kim Hye-ja as a distressed mother who fights to prove her son's innocence against false charge of homicide.

Japanese director Hirokazu Kore-eda´s “AIR DOLL”

Pen-ek Ratanaruang director will present “NYMPH” (Thailand)

Jung Yu-mi´s animation "Dust Kid" has been invited to the Director's Fortnight Program.

The 10-minute independent short animation features a theme that although, like dust settling directly after cleaning, people are never free from worries, they are still able to garner their strength.

The only brasilian film in competition (Un Certain Regard section) is “À Deriva”, from director Heitor Dhalia.

Three women directors had their films nominated for the Palme d'Or. The aussie Jane Campion (the only woman that won the Palme d´Or with “The Piano”) with “BRIGHT STAR” (Australia, UK, France), spanish director Isabel Coixet, with “MAP OF THE SOUDS OF TOKYO”, that looks very interesting and finally, Andrea Arnold and the film “FISH TANK” (UK, Holand).

The Awards

New Currents competition section(this year shared between two films):

Land of Scarecrows (Korea) and Naked of Defenses (Japan)

Scarecrows, directed by Roh Gyung-tae, is a collection of stories of isolated people including one about a transgender woman who wants to become a man. The jury said “a very powerful film about somebody who's trying to find the sexual identify. It’s a touching film about a woman who wants to be somebody else in the modern world that influenced her with pollution around her. It´s a very truthful picture and items about the pollutions and sexuality. You can’t define the character’s own self or way out of things because strong vision to search of identify and such was a fresh for us.”

Naked of Defenses (by Ichii Masahide) portrays a female worker at a plastics factory and delves into her past memories. The jury said “is about childless woman who meets pregnant woman in the factory. It is well directed and acted with realistic and identifying characters. It´s a film that comes from a heart. It also a well narrated and realistically portrayed about two women and has an unusual style.

The Jury also made two special mentions, one for Baek Seung Bin's Members of the Funeral (South Korea) and the other was for Yang Jin's Er Dong (China).

Synopsis

Limi is a cab driver who has been trying to find her fiancé, Fang Wen, since he disappeared when her parents broke off their pending marriage. Qiu Shuitian is a small-time crook from the countryside who comes to the big city with hopes of getting his hands on some booty to take home with him and finding his true love. Lastly, Feifei is a recovering drug addict who has found support in her lover and business partner, Ma Bing. A mysterious death and its subsequent investigation suddenly intertwine the lives of these characters, gradually revealing the bizarre connection between them.

Director and screenwriter

A graduate from the Beijing Film Academy in 1989, Cao Baoping taught screenwriting for years before shooting his first film. In 1990, he started writing and directing films for television, such as Absolute Feelings (2001). In 2004, he wrote, directed and produced his first feature film, Trouble Makers. In 2005, he also directed the TV drama 10 Months of Pregnancy.

If you are a fan of the X-files tv series, don´t miss the new film. I did watch it yesterday, and it is great to see Mulder and Scully together again! The chemistry between the lead actors still shows on the screen, and if the film has the feel of a longer TV episode, we hope someday they´ll give Chris Carter real cash (to make a great film with $35 mil? only if you are a Korean movie director) to make a bigger adventure, and make happy the CGI fans.

The Favorites

Nominated in 11 categories, The Chaser, a film about a serial murderer, with over 5 million viewers, the most successful Korean film of 2008, according to the Korean Film Council.

Cannes International Film Festival 2008

French film wins top prize in Cannes - the first French winner in Cannes since 1987.

The only big surprise on the night was the fact that Israeli animated documentary "Waltz With Bashir" went unrecognized.

CANNES, France

Entre les murs (The Class), a film set in a tough Parisian high school, won the Palme d'Or for best picture at the Cannes festival on Sunday.

Directed by Laurent Cantet, the picture based on an autobiographical novel by Francois Begaudeau.

"I think it would be good for all those people who claim to be able to judge youth ... in two or three aphorisms to learn something new about youth," said Begaudeau, who also plays the central teacher in the film.

The Grand Prix went to Italy's Gomorra (Gomorrah), Matteo Garrone's hard-hitting film about the world of the Camorra Naples crime network.

Jury Award: Il Divo, the Italian film a satire on the life of former prime minister Giulio Andreotti and directed by Paolo Sorrentino.

Special Prize: Catherine Deneuve and Clint Eastwood.

Best Director: Turkey's Nuri Bilge Ceylan for Three Monkeys.

Best Actor: Benicio del Toro, for his portrayal of the Argentine revolutionary Ernesto "Che" Guevara in Steven Soderbergh's epic four-and-a-half hour Che.

Best Actress: Sandra Corveloni, in the Brazilian drama Linha de Passe (Line of Passage).

Best Screenplay: Belgium's Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, for Lorna's Silence.

Camera d'Or (given to debut directors): Britain's Steve McQueen, for Hunger.

Korean Cinema Invited to Cannes

South Korean films invited to the 2008 Cannes Film Festival

This year, Cannes opens it´s doors to a “more commercial” kind of movies produced in S. Korea, like The Good, the Bad, and the Weird (invited to the Out of Competition section).

The film The Chaser, by first time director Na Hong-jin, and a great success in Korea, will be screened for Midnight Screenings.

Late director Kim Ki-young´s thriller The Housemaid (1960) will be shown at the Classic section . “It is one of the most important works done by Kim, an eccentric figure in Korean film history, someone with extremely extraordinary imagination,” was digitally restored by the Korean Film Archive with sponsors from World Cinema Foundation lead by Martin Scorsese.

And the always brilliant director Bong Joon-ho (The Host) was invited to the Un Certain Regard section. Tokyo! is an omnibus film co-directed by Michel Gondry and Leos Carax, and in Shaking Tokyo segment, Bong pictures the lonely inner side of human beings through the scenery of a megacity named Tokyo.

There´s a great expectation with director Kim Jee-woon´s new film The Good, the Bad, and the Weird, after such different movies as The Foul King, A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life. In The Good… the director revives the so-called 'Manchurian Western', which was popular with Korean films back in 1960s and 70s. Korea's top actors Lee Byung-hun (JSA), Song Kang-ho (The Host) and Jung Woo-sung (Daisy) will be starring in it.

And short animation STOP, by Park Jae-wook will be screened for the Cinefondation section.

12th Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival

The 12th Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival (SICAF), the biggest annual event of its kind in Asia. SICAF, launched in 1995, has received formal recognition as an animation event from the Association International Du Film d'Animation in 2005.

Bringing together fans of animation films and an exhibition of cartoon work, the festival, which is to be held from May 21 to 25, will feature 137 animations from 30 countries, the most in the history of the annual event.

The animation lovers will be able to enjoy high-quality full-length features and shorts from around the world this year.

The films will be screened at Lotte Cinema near Konkuk University.
The finalists this year include award-winning animations such as The Peace Sister from Britain, Ark from Poland and Canada's Madam Tutli-Putli.

Jeonju International Film Festival

Twelve films from all over the world were selected for the international competition section of the the 9th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) slated from May 1st through 9th. The purpose of the Jeonju International Film Festival is to discover new, promising directors.

The panel of judges will be comprised of five reputed filmmakers from Korea and abroad, including Korean director Bong Joon-ho (The Host), actress Eom Ji-won (A Tale of Cinema), Iranian director Abolfazi Jalili, author and critic Chris Fujiwara, and Turkish culture writer Defne Gürsoy.

This year's program boasts a record total of 169 films with opening night going to Manda Kunitoshi's The Kiss in its International Premiere. And the curtain-closer will be the Korean omnibus film If You Were Me 4, produced by the National Human Rights Commission.

Sinopse

Um detetive de polícia de Seul volta para sua cidade natal para o funeral de um antigo amigo de escola, assassinado por uma gangue local. Ao reencontrar os amigos de infância e relembrar o passado, sente-se na obrigação de investigar o crime, com ou sem a ajuda dos colegas.

Gangues escolares, grupos mafiosos, negócios ilícitos envolvendo as autoridades locais, se mesclam numa trama um tanto confusa e inverossímel, mas que serve de desculpa para as cenas de ação desenfreada. E é o que basta para os fãs de coreografias de luta bem elaboradas. O carismático Jeong Du-Hong (ator, mestre diretor de coreografia de luta da Seoul Action School) e seu amigo de longa data, o jovem ator-diretor Ryu Seung-Wan, formam uma dupla inesquecível.

O filme anterior de Ryu Seung-Wan lançado em dvd, Arahan (2004), também é estrelado por Jeong Du-Hong, além do irmão do diretor, o o talentoso jovem ator Ryu Seung-bum. O que chama a atenção é que o acabamento de fotografia e edição de Arahan faz com que essa produção pareça mais nova que A Cidade da Violência. De qualquer modo, são dois filmes imperdíveis do celebrado cinema coreano, tão pouco visto por aqui. Esperamos que chegue logo outro ótimo filme de Ryu Seung-Wan, Crying Fist (2005), estrelado por Choi Min-sik (Oldboy).

Como de costume, mais um filme asiático que chega ao país direto em dvd.
